Moving to Thailand
When moving to Thailand, it’s natural to want to bring along your favorite belongings, furniture, and other items that remind you of home. The best and most affordable way to ship your belongings is by sea. To import a container with personal items and clear it through customs, it’s essential to follow Thai customs regulations and properly prepare all required documents.
Customs Control in Thailand
Thai border regulations do not impose limitations on the weight or dimensions of personal belongings. However, there are restrictions based on the importer’s status and specific categories of imported items.
Customs inspection of personal belongings when relocating to Thailand includes the following steps:
- Verification of permits granting duty-free import of household items. The right to duty-free import applies to individuals who have received a residence permit valid for more than a year or who enter the country for permanent residence under a foreign quota with an identification card.
- Verification of the customs declaration. All items must be listed in the declaration, including quantity, technical specifications, and consumer characteristics.
- Inspection to ensure that the declared items match the actual cargo and to check for prohibited or restricted items.
Prohibited items include:
- Narcotic and psychotropic substances
- Weapons and ammunition
- Photo and video materials, and items of pornographic nature
- Certain plants and animals
- Contraband – undeclared items and goods
Import Duty:
Items that may be considered as goods or potential sources of income may be subject to import duty:
- New identical items and packaged food in quantities clearly exceeding personal use
- Items not used in daily life – such as industrial equipment and spare parts, or raw industrial materials
- Other goods that suggest importation for resale
The declared value must be supported by financial documents such as receipts, invoices, or certificates. If no supporting documents are provided, customs officials will independently assess the value based on local market prices in Thailand. The import duty amount is calculated according to the Thai Harmonized System (HS Code).
If any errors are made in the paperwork, personal belongings may be placed in a paid bonded warehouse for up to 2 months.
